About Us‎ > ‎

GMS understands that a uniform provides safe clothing choices, is convenient for parents, readily identifies students and provides a sense of belonging.
Students and families have a choice of colours and components which allows children choice and freedom within boundaries – promoting the development of individuality, confidence, responsibility and self-discipline whilst protecting self-esteem.

School life at GMS is hands-on and practical.  Students are regularly working on the floor, gardening, pouring, cooking, cleaning, etc.  The uniform is designed to be warm or cool, practical and good quality, allows freedom of movement and safety, and yet is not expensive or “precious”.

Our emblem symbolises the primary colours and shapes important to sensory education via Montessori materials.  The triangles represent individual potential – reaching up from strong base and the three points also pay our respect to the three families who founded GMS.  The encompassing ellipse references cosmic education, our place in the universe and our resolve for peace and sustainability.

There are no uniform requirements for Nido. We recommend that all Nido students and their carers (to model appropriate behavior) wear a sun smart hat during terms 1 and 4. As Gisborne weather is quite cold during terms 2 & 3, a winter beanie is also recommended for comfort during outdoor play.

Early Starters (Plovers Group)

Early Starters (Plovers Group) students are required to have a school hat and a polo top.  These items must be named. As Gisborne weather is quite cold during terms 2 & 3, a winter beanie is also recommended for comfort during outdoor play.

Cycle 1, 2 & 3

Uniform is compulsory for all Cycle 1, 2 and 3 students. It is a policy of the School that all students in Cycle 1, 2 and 3 present themselves in School uniform every day. A school excursion bag, school sunsmart hat and a library bag are also compulsory items.  On excursion, we insist students wear red colour uniform polo shirts or jumpers for safety reasons to assist staff supervising a group.
