Art, Music & Language

Creative expression and the study of a language other than English are important elements of the Montessori curriculum and Gisborne Montessori School.

Art is an everyday part of the Montessori classroom activity.

Art and craft activities are always available in the Cycle 1 room, Nido and early starters group.

Full-time Cycle 1, Cycle 2 and 3 students are given opportunities to express themselves creatively and discover art theory, through classroom work and dedicated project work time with a qualified art teacher.

Music is also an everyday part of the Montessori classroom activity.

This is incorporated into the Nido, Early Starters group as an informal part of the program, while the preschool and full time students in Cycle 1, 2 and 3 also participate in a music program with a qualified music teacher.

A variety of instruments are also offered as elective instruments for full-time students, including piano, violin, flute, guitar, clarinet and voice.

Music also forms a component of the School’s annual concert.  All students are given an opportunity to participate in this event.

Auslan (sign language for communication with the hearing impaired) is the LOTE offered to all cycle 2 and 3 students.  Studying this language enables our students to develop an appreciation of the basic fundamentals and principles of communication between people in any language.

Students start by learning the Auslan alphabet and simple gestures progressing through to words and sentences.  The children enjoy learning songs in Auslan for the school concert and other school performances.
